Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse- Dark Night of the Soul

Item Description:
Dark Night Of The Soul is an album by audio auteur Danger Mouse and the already much-missed Sparklehorse. The record sees the pair joined by the following remarkable roll call of guests: The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Julian Casablancas (The Strokes), Black Francis (The Pixies), Iggy Pop, David Lynch, James Mercer (The Shins/Broken Bells), Nina Persson (The Cardigans), Suzanne Vega and Vic Chesnutt. Rumors of this mysterious collaborative project began to circulate in early 2009 sparking widespread anticipation and excitement. Now, following months of talks, Danger Mouse and EMI are excited and proud to announce that Dark Night Of The Soul will be released worldwide in July.

While this beautiful, haunting record being made widely and legitimately available is undoubtedly a cause for celebration, the news is shadowed by sadness following the recent passing of Mark Linkous, who released and performed under the Sparklehorse pseudonym. Dark Night Of The Soul will now stand as a de facto tribute to this well-loved, stunningly talented yet often-overlooked artist. In addition to featuring on two songs, celebrated fi lm director David Lynch has created a series of original photographs for Dark Night Of The Soul adding a spectacular visual dimension that will be incorporated in to the artwork for this already unparalleled project.

The deluxe version includes: 2xLPs, CD, instrumental CD, poster, lobby cards and 48-page 12×12 booklet in box featuring the photography of David Lynch.

The Gaslight Anthem- American Slang

Item Description:
“American Slang” marks an extraordinary leap forward for the Gaslight Anthem, revealing a triumphant rock ‘n’ roll band honed by two years of nearly non-stop touring. Singer/guitarist Brian Fallon’s lyrical approach has grown more personal and introspective, his raw throated vocals stronger and more resonant against the band’s boundless dynamic force. American Slang is a classic rock and roll album, that will be a benchmark for other bands to measure themselves against and try to mimic for generations to come.

Rolling Stones- Exile On Main St. (Remastered, Deluxe 2CD Set)

Item Description:
Regarded as one of the greatest albums in rock ‘n’ roll history and one of the most defining of the Stones’ catalogue. Upon its release more than three decades ago, ‘Exile on Main Street’ innovatively wove varying musical genres, instruments and even artists into a compelling rhythmic masterpiece. The original 18-track double-album was recorded in various stages at multiple locations, including Olympic Studios in London, Keith Richard’s mansion Nellcote in France, and in Los Angeles where the literal “Main Street” influenced the album title. These atypical circumstances surrounding the recording process greatly affected the album’s outcome which was highly reflective and influenced by the sociopolitical turbulence that marked the late `60s and early `70s. The Stones nixed the influences of a flower-child era and directed their creative process with the edgier, excessive, “more is more” approach of the `70s. Exile reveals a sprawling mix of genres with undertones of blues, country, R&B and gospel mixed with lyrics that fervently demand for release and liberation. The 2-CD version is a 3-panel digi-pak, 2xCDs with a 12 page booklet. The Digipak is printed in reverse board double white to keep an ‘uncoated’ feel like the original LP release. The 2nd disc features 10 tracks originally recorded during the Exile era including ‘Plundered My Soul’, ‘Dancing in the Light’, ‘Following the River’ and ‘Pass The Wine’ plus alternate versions of ‘Soul Survivor’ and ‘Loving Cup’.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers- Mojo

Item Description:
Some time in the last few years Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers took a left turn. Maybe it was when Petty woke up in the night with the idea of reuniting his first band, Mudcrutch, to cut the album they never got a chance to make back in the early 70′s. Maybe it was when the Heartbreakers assembled the mammoth multi-disc ‘The Live Anthology,’ which detailed thirty years of concerts. Maybe it was when they gave all their home movies, outtakes and live footage to director Peter Bogdanovich to create the Grammy-winning four-hour career documentary ‘Runnin Down A Dream.’ There have been side projects and experiments since the band last went into the studio to cut a new Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers album. With ‘MOJO,’ they have taken their recent freedom and experimentation to heart. They have gone off the reservation and all signs indicate they aren’t coming back.

The first thing that hits you about ‘MOJO’ is that the spirit of the Mudcrutch sessions has carried on with the Heartbreakers. This is the sound of a band playing together in a room not a studio – facing each other, all singing and playing at the same time. The music is alive, with no overdubs or studio trickery. What you hear is what they created on the spot at that time.

Tom Petty says, ‘With this album, I want to show other people what I hear with the band. ‘MOJO’ is where the band lives when it’s playing for itself.’

The Steve Miller Band- Bingo!

Item Description:
Recorded at film producer George Lucas’ infamous studios at Skywalker Ranch, ‘Bingo!’ is The Steve Miller Band’s first studio album in 17 years.

‘Bingo!’ is the album Steve Miller has waited his entire life to make. Reaching back to his apprenticeship as a young man on the Chicago blues scene, Miller and co-producer Andy Johns brought classic rhythm and blues numbers that have been at the foundation of his music throughout his career into the 21st century. A true return to Miller’s roots, ‘Bingo!’ echoes his early years in the Chicago music scene and features carefully chosen and crafted blues tracks performed in distinctive Steve Miller Band fashion.

‘Bingo!’ was co-produced by Andy Johns (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Van Halen), with artwork designed by the legendary Storm Thorgerson.

For the “hipster” Dad:

Drake- Thank Me Later

Item Description:
Giving it an 8.4/10 rating, Pitchfork Media writer Ryan Dombal praised Drake’s “understated-yet-undeniable emotion” and performance with hip hop and R&B styles, stating “Thank Me Later presents its star as a bottle-serviced hip-hop headcase tirelessly searching for love and good times while caught up in his own thoughts… Drake manages to make his plight tugging and relatable thanks to a potent mix of empathy, candidness, and grandeur. This is mood music inspired by rap and R&B in equal measure”.

The National- High Violet

Item Description:
High Violet, the new full-length record by the National, is a nervy, melodic, explosive and beautiful set of songs that find the band at the height of their collaborative powers. The music is wide-ranging in its moods, by turns intimate and rough, expansive and spare, full of stark angles and atmosphere. Berninger’s singing wild, half-broken, sly evokes a feeling of being haunted, by love, by paranoia, by something just out of reach. High Violet may be The National’s most thematically twisted record to date but it somehow also manages to be their most infectious and immediate.

Hot Hot Heat- Future Breeds

Item Description:
Alternative Press (p.122) – 4.5 stars out of 5 — “Expertly crafted and passionately played, there are enough hooks on FUTURE BREEDS to keep you singing along and new layers of aural intensity to keep discovering with each repeated listen.”

The Black Keys- Brothers

Item Description:
Danger Mouse returned to co-produce ‘Tighten Up’ on ‘Brothers,’ but for the most part, the duo was on its own, spending ten days at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama and coming up with the an even more intensely focused, deeply soulful set that includes a cover of Jerry Butler’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up.’ The performances are inventive and impassioned: Auerbach extends his vocal range to falsetto on the lead-off track ‘Everlasting Light’ and ‘The Only One’; ‘Howlin’ For You’ opens with a Gary Glitter-style drum riff and the chorus practically invites singing along. The tunes offer a surprising amount of lyrical candor and more than a little dark humor; the grooves alternate between ballsy swagger and bluesy rumination. The album reflects where Auerbach and Carney have been lately, most recently collaborating with a who’s who of New York City MC’s, including RZA, Q Tip, Mos Def and Raekwon on the 2009 BlakRoc super-session organized by hip-hop impresario and Black Keys fan Damon Dash. They’ve also pursued projects on their own, Auerbach with his solo ‘Keep It Hid’ album and tour, Carney with his band Drummer and its debut disc, ‘Feels Good Together.’ Their maturation didn’t happen just in the studio, though. Carney admits, ‘Dan and I grew up a lot as individuals and musicians prior to making this album. Our relationship was tested in many ways but at the end of the day, we’re brothers, and I think these songs reflect that.’

Paul Weller- Wake Up The Nation

Item Description:
After an unparalleled career, characterized by constant musical experimentation, we should be used to Paul Weller’s relentless desire to chop and change his sound. But after the triumphant, Brit Award-bagging success of 22 Dreams (his third solo number one in the UK), his new album Wake Up the Nation sees one of rock’s most iconic songwriters expand and evolve once more.
A departure stylistically from the more pastoral sounds of his last album, Wake Up is lean, mean and as uncompromisingly focused as its maker. It also brings Paul Weller full circle: twenty-eight years on from The Jam’s split, two tracks feature the former bassist Bruce Foxton. The album also sees contributions from My Bloody Valentine guitar alchemist Kevin Shields, ELO’s Bev Bevan and legendary session drummer Clem Cattini.

Sleigh Bells- Treats

Item Description:
The New York City dou known as Sleigh Bells emerged in the Fall of 2009 with rhythmic pop songs that combine overdriven guitar riffs and sugary female vocal melodies. Derek Miller, who played in teh popular Florida hardcore outfit Poison the Well, teamed up with singer Alexis Krauss after he happened to serve her and her mother at a Brazillian restaurant in Brooklyn. As proof of their winning formula, Sleigh Bells quickly earned the adoration of critics at the New Yorker, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and the Village Voice. They are celebrated by both their hometown’s outer-borough lo-fi rock scene and international pop acts like Major Lazer andn MIA, who collaborated with Derek on her forthcoming third LP.

Dr. Lonnie Smith- Spiral

Item Description:
The Doctor is back doing his funky jazz thing…this time with his touring trio of Jonathan Kreisberg and Jamire Williams. This band is tight and playing standard jazz tunes in a not so standard way. They’ll be out touring in support of this release, so do yourself a favor and get out to see the master at work.
Dr. Lonnie Smith is internationally known as one of the premier jazz keyboardists in the history of the idiom. A dominant talent and pace-setting proponent of the Hammond B3 Organ, Dr. Lonnie Smith has been at the forefront of the jazz scene since 1969 when he was first named Top Organist by Downbeat Magazine

Janelle Monáe- The ArchAndroid

Item Description:
‘The ArchAndroid’ is an ‘EMOTION PICTURE’ brought to you by Janelle Monáe and the Mad Minds of the Wondaland Arts Society. The star-studded featured cast includes the legendary Big Boi of OutKast, renowned poet Saul Williams, psychedelic dance-punk troupe Of Montreal, punk prophets Deep Cotton, and the Wondaland Arch Orchestra. The album was recorded at Wondaland Studios in Atlanta, but written all over the world, including but not limited to Moscow, Prague, Istanbul, Berlin, Amsterdam, New York, and the Palace of the Dogs. ‘The ArchAndroid’ was inspired not only by the energy of these places, but by such revolutionary musicians and artistic visionaries as Salvador Dalí, Walt Disney, OutKast, Stevie Wonder, Octavia Butler, David Bowie, Andy Warhol, and John Williams. The album was Executive Produced by Nate Wonder, Chuck Lightning, Janelle Monáe, and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, with Co-Executive Production from Big Boi of OutKast.

David Cross- Bigger and Blackerer (CD/DVD)

Item Description:
There’s an ease to his delivery that belies the album’s overblown title, but Bigger and Blackerer is indeed a bigger to-do than any of Cross’ previous projects, and not just because it was recorded at two consecutive shows at Boston’s Wilbur Theatre, a venue considerably larger than those that provided the staging grounds for Shut Up, You Fucking Baby! and It’s Not Funny. The two shows aren’t cut together into a seamless string of highlights, but rather presented as one CD and one DVD containing the two different performances, which turns out to be a bit of a godsend for comedy nerds who can now linger in the minute differences between the two performances, hearing how Cross twists the same material just a few hours later, following the different detours in each performance. No other comedy album or video has been presented like this, and it helps make Bigger and Blackerer something a little bit more than a very good comedy album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Smokin’ Joe Kubek & Bnois King- Have Blues Will Travel

Item Description:
With Have Blues, Will Travel, Smokin’ Joe Kubek & Bnois King take another giant step forward. Kubek and King wrote or co-wrote all twelve songs, and, along with their road-tested rhythm section, they ignite a blues fire with enough heat to fuel an all-night party. The chemistry between Kubek’s blistering fretwork and King’s savvy vocals and unpredictable, multifaceted guitar work creates a roadhouse blend of muscular blues-rock, hip-shaking shuffles and slow-burning blues that is simply impossible to resist. Each song is infused with deep, from-the-heart musicianship, carefully crafted, true-to-life lyrics and delivered with the occasional wry smile. King calls Have Blues, Will Travel the best record the band has ever made.

Bill Kirchen- Word To The Wise

Item Description:
Bill Kirchen’s sophomore release for Proper American, celebrating more than 40 years in the business with featured performances by longtime Kirchen collaborators Elvis Costello, Paul Carrick, Nick Lowe, Dan Hicks, Maria Muldaur, Chris O’Connell, Commander Cody, Norton Buffalo and Blackie Farrell, among others.

Flying Lotus- Cosmogramma

Item Description:
When global bass music matriarch Mary Anne Hobbs recently told The Fader ”Flying Lotus, for me,is like the Hendrix of his generation”, it seemed more than an audacious opinion, and with the arrival of Cosmogramma, it’s revealed as a revelation. In the past couple of years since his debut album, Los Angeles, Flying Lotus has grown into the position of being far more than a producer, he has helped materialize a far-reaching strain of musical ideology that has encompassed not only a global family of like-minded artists, but also a nearly infinite palate of planetary (and interplanetary) sonics. No longer simply an outgrowth of Ellisona’s machines, the music here is also the product of live instrumentalists from the worlds that Cosmogramma engages. There’s the constant bass presence of ”Thundercat”, a cornerstone of Sa-Ra Creative; there’s Rebekah Raff’s harp connecting the dots between the music of Harry Partch and Ghostface Killah (both of which she’s performed); there’s an appearance by the tenor sax of Steven’s cousin and jazz royalty, Ravi Coltrane, and by the voice of one Thom Yorke, an Oxford bloke taking respite from singing in the most influential rock band of the 21st century.

Nas & Damian Marley- Distant Relatives

Item Description:
International Hip Hop superstar Nas and Grammy-winning artist Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley join creative forces to release this highly anticipated and exciting 2010 collaboration. This is an album created by the two serious artists to explore and celebrate the correlations and deep-rooted connections between reggae and Hip Hop, tracing both sounds back to the African motherland that is both the cradle of humanity and the wellspring of mankind’s music. The project features the signature instrumentation and musicianship of Marley with the hard-hitting beats and lyrics of Nas. Distant Relatives traces the direct line from Dancehall Reggae’s breakthrough moment 40 years ago to the rise of Hip Hop several years later.

Berninger’s singing—wild, half-broken, sly—evokes a feeling of being haunted, by love, by paranoia, by something just out of reach. High Violet may be The National’s most thematically twisted record to date but it somehow also manages to be their most infectious and immediate. Record Theatre’s CD stock has the “Limited Edition CD with Deluxe Foil Package & Bonus Poster Designed by the Band”. This title is aslo available on vinyl & is selling fast!

Reflection Eternal - Revolutions Per Minute

Item Description:
Since 1997, Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek have achieved critical success as the rap & producer collaboration known as Reflection Eternal.
Talib Kweli has established himself as one of rap’s premier acts, delivering stunning, uplifting singles like ‘Get By’ and acclaimed, well-rounded and thought-provoking albums like 2007′s ‘Eardrum.’
Hi-Tek has become one of rap’s go-to producers, working extensively with Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, G-Unit, The Game and Ghostface Killah, among others.

Bettye LaVette- Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook

Item Description:
Bettye LaVette brings the British Invasion home to its American R&B roots on Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook. Produced by Bettye, Rob Mathes and Michael Stevens, the album is a 13 song journey through compositions by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd among others, concluding right where the very idea for Interpretations started: Bettye s visceral rendition of The Who’s Love Reign O er Me from the 2008 Kennedy Center Honors, which appears here as a bonus track. That performance which first brought Bettye together with Stevens (the event s producer) and Mathes (its musical director) showcased for a national television audience what her devoted fanbase already knew: Bettye LaVette is without parallel as an interpreter of popular song. The success of this performance lead to another astonishing moment on the national stage, her duet of Sam Cooke s Change Is Gonna Come with Jon Bon Jovi at the Obama Inaugural Concert.

Item Description:
Jackson Browne & David Lindley’s Love Is Strange is a chronicle of their 2006 Tour of Spain. Performing in Madrid, Barcelona, Oveido and Sevilla. Hoodoo Gurus- Purity of Essence

Item Description:
Hoodoo Gurus are back in the game with their latest album ‘Purity Of Essence’. A jam session at a Sydney rehearsal studio earlier this year produced eight songs and set the template for their ninth studio record.

CocoRosie- Grey Oceans

Item Description:
CocoRosie are two American-born sisters, Sierra and Bianca, who started making music together in Paris in 2003. The nomadic duo (currently and temporarily residing in New Mexico) spent much of 2008 writing and recording in Buenos Aires, Melbourne, Berlin, New York, and Paris, finding amazing and diverse musicians to collaborate along the way. The result is their 11-song Sub Pop debut, Grey Oceans. Also available on vinyl!

The Dead Weather- Sea of Cowards

Item Description:
The latest musical adventure by Jack White (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs), epitomizes the alt-rock ethic–do the music you love, do it yourself, and do it fast. The Dead Weather brings together lead singer Alison Mosshart (half of the London-based lo-fi post-punk duo The Kills), Queens Of The Stone Age guitarist Dean Fertita, The Raconteurs’ bassist Jack Lawrence, and White on drums and vocals.

The Hold Steady- Heaven is Whenever

Item Description:
After announcing the departure of keyboardist Franz Nicolay, the Hold Steady decided to return to the more stripped-down sound of their earlier records with their fifth album, Heaven Is Whenever.
Rolling Stone gives it- 4 stars out of 5 — “On HEAVEN IS WHENEVER, the Hold Steady don’t just show us how much they love classic rock — they make some of their own. It’s their most polished record, nearly majestic at points…”

About the Performers:

Wooden Waves

LISTEN HERE
Adventurous live music and visuals inspired by underwater space travel, Esther Williams, dub electro, and graffiti… Born from the ashes of the great Sleeping Kings of Iona, Wooden Waves brings more of dance party vibe, while maintaining the aesthetics that “Sleeping Kings of Iona” were so known for.

Here Come the Comets

LISTEN HERE
A blend of space rock, meets alt county, meets 70′s boogie woogie rock. Melodic, layered, quiet yet loud, soft yet chaotic. Songwriting inspired by some of the great story tellers of years past. Their 2008 release “Falling Anvils” has been one of our best selling & consistant sellers. Pick it up today!

Son of the Sun

LISTEN HERE
Originally conceived by multi-instrumentalist Joseph Stocker and guitarist/vocalist Zak Ward, Son of the Sun has fleshed out their already considerably lush sound with the addition of Jeremy Franklin on guitar, Steve Matthews on bass, and Brandon Delmont on drums. What was once a muted, sparse take on rock music has become a grandiose love letter to the driving heart of Kinks style harmonies and Velvet Underground guitars. SOTS is making the leap into the spotlight just as they set-up their newest release The Happy Loss coming in Spring of 2010.

DJ Cutler

LISTEN HERE
“DJ Cutler and Optimus Prime are record-crate scrapers, soundbox dumpster-divers who snip and clip and scratch from multiple disparate sources to put together a minimalist, funky, jittery set of joints that always seem to be moving in a different direction from where you might expect. Those of us who thought of Buffalo as a place you had to drive through to get to Niagara Falls will reconsider after hearing these joints. Highly recommended.” –music-reviewer.com
Pick up Cutler & Down’s “Blue Collar Funk” CDs & accompanying 7″ vinyl while they last!

Mike Vargovich/The Generic Brand

LISTEN HERE
Great combination of carefree fun and introspective honesty, all layered above punchy power chords, the occasional slow piano riff, and the desire to create simple, catchy, melodic music that hasn’t been heard since the late 90′s. Pick up Mike’s latest CD “Clark County Welcomes You.” today!

Kool Taj the Gr8

LISTEN HERE
Kool Taj has appeared on countless mixtapes, including the internationally-distributed Scion “Free Up You Mix” CD in 2007, which moved over 500,000 copies. Taj’s debut with indie-label DTR45, “Hip Hop in the Flesh” will be released Spring 2010 and represents a long awaited milestone for the true-school hip hop artist, whose effortless style stands out as a breath of fresh air amongst the abundance of monotony in today’s hip hop.

Cassi Meyerhoffer

LISTEN HERE
From Cassi’s MYSPACE page:
“i write songs because of those moments when i hear music and it hurts so much i can’t move or it moves me so much that i forget to hurt. i write songs because i have to put “it” somewhere. i write songs because i don’t know what i would do if i didn’t. i play with a drummer now, his name is ken culton and he is awesome. you should come watch us play.”

Bass Reeves

LISTEN HERE
After a career in the background as a writer, poet and creative force…S B Reeves has emerged as a dynamic performing artist…..Over the past decade he has impressed audiences with his mesmerizing presentations by himself or with his band everywhere from the street corner to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The album “If You Ignore the Truth” has steadily gained a worldwide recognition as one of the great lyrically driven storytelling style recordings in a generation. Purchase the CD at Record Theatre & get a FREE Bass Reeves T-Shirt compliments of Bass himself!

Pennsylvania and Gold

LISTEN HERE
Once upon a time in a land far, far away (that never actually existed) Mazzy Star, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Radiohead took a vacation to Spain (which does actually exist.) It wasn’t all of the members, silly, just the important ones that people remember like Hope Sandoval, David Roback, Nick, Barry and Blixa, Thom and Jonny and whomever the drummer in Radiohead actually is. After the funning and sunning, this curious and unlikely band of folks decided to play some music and what came out was their mutual affinity for Crazy Horse (the Neil Young backing band not the legendary Ogala Sioux leader, although I hear he had a lovely voice.) I might add that PA & Gold feature at least 4 ex-Record Theatre employees that you will instantly recocnize!

Hunger Anthem

LISTEN HERE
From Hunger Anthem’s Facebook page:
Hunger Anthem is an indie power rock trio from Buffalo, NY. We are rapidly approaching deafness, and have a great appreciation for the simpler things in life, such as split and bloody fingers and complete emotional upheaval. We have an s/t full length out.

Spirit Chief

Standard of Living

LISTEN HERE
Born in 2004 in a basement along the shores of Lake Erie, Standard Of Living’s members have created and nurtured an impressive dynamic. Singer/songwriter Josh Rabenold totes an amazingly powerful voice and a writing style that speaks volumes about modern life within wonderfully melodic verses. On top of his vocal exclamation, Clayton Cobb, Ken Stiver, Dan Reedy and Mike Lindstrom construct contagious melodies with a wide palette of pop sounds and soaring vocal harmonies reminiscent of The Beach Boys. The band is currently working on material for their forthcoming album while touring extensively.

The Stay Lows

LISTEN HERE
Mostly instrumental, The Stay Lows embrace the concept of images through sound, and the existence of a midpoint between pretentious and geek. The Stay Lows blend elements of math-rock with symphonic song structures, all encased in a seemingly simple display of pop. The result is often compared to a film score or a movie yet to be made.

Fresh Wax

ON VINYL:
Spoon
Given Spoon’s reputation for consistency, it’s not a surprise that the self-produced ‘Transference’ is good. However, it manages to be good in surprising ways.
Surfer Blood
The debut LP from this young Florida band is first and foremost a great guitar album packed with sing-along hooks, but there’s more going on beneath the surface.
Beach House
Shadowy dream-pop masters Beach House release their third album, the most diverse and most listenable of their full-lengths, and yet it never seems like a compromise.
Vampire Weekend
The highly anticipated follow-up to Vampire Weekend’s critically hailed debut. Another criminally catchy masterpiece, Contra is loaded with the jingle-jangle rhythms the boys have become notorious for.
Uncle Tupelo
A perfect pairing of rock and country from the Illinois Trio that launched a genre. Presented for the first time on vinyl! 180g.
Kraftwerk
Avant-pop modernists, a crucial influence on the early pioneers of hip-hop sampling, electro and industrial music. 5 classic albums beautifully remastered.

Music In Review (Holiday Style)

In The Christmas Groove – Various Artists (Strut Records)
It’s that time of year again, and love it or hate it, you are bound to be overwhelmed by such a  barrage of Christmas classics and flash-in-the-pan renditions of standards you’ve heard a million times before. Try as you might, you won’t be able to leave the house without hearing a jingle bell or the sordid stories of the annual troubles of certain snowmen and reindeer. It’s a given. The necessary evil of Christmas time, guaranteed to have you coughing up tinsel by the end of it all.
I’m no Grinch, let that be known. I understand that the incredibly depressing “Silent Night’s” and “Carol of Bells” of the world are meant to evoke nostalgia, not give small children nightmares. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of exceptional Christmas tunes to help get the pickiest of music geeks though the holidays unscathed. The drunken holiday swagger of “Fairytale of New York” by The Pogues and the social commentary of Lennon’s “Happy Xmas” (War Is Over) immediately come to mind. Not to mention Phil Spector’s “A Christmas Gift For You” or James Brown’s “Funky Christmas.” The latter of which brings us into the spirit of Strut Records’ foray into the genre of Yule-tidings with the incredible compilation, “In The Christmas Groove.”
In The Christmas Groove unites 14 rare soul, funk and blues cuts rediscovered by the ghost of Christmas past. 60’s and 70’s AM rock and soul arguably got the ball rolling for all of the bearable Christmas hits of our day. This compilation proves it while blowing everything else out of the water and gives the holidays the dose of soul it so desperately needs. Strut Records did a great job of digging in the snow for these gems because most of these tracks were only available on long out of print singles and 45’s.
Things get rolling with  a rollicking rendition of the standard, “Auld Lang Syne” by The Black On White Affair. Starting out with slow-burn organ and morphing into anything but standard after the dirty-funk backbeat kicks in. Probably the only danceable version of the song I have ever heard.  J.D. McDonald’s “Boogaloo Santa Claus” reinvents the red-coated gift-giver as a party animal who gives presents to the best dancers.
“The New Year” by Jimmy Jules & The Nuclear Soul System tells a tale of hardship and second chances alongside an upbeat and string-heavy backdrop that sounds like it could have been an Isaac Hayes tune left off of Hot Buttered Soul. The Harlem Children’s Chorus hits you with a bit of reality with the harmony heavy “Black Christmas,” illustrating how it can be a little tougher to hope for peace on earth while living in the ghetto.
You won’t find yourself down for too long. “Funky Funky Christmas” by Electric Jungle pick things up with the horn filled abc’s of funk intertwining with some tongue in cheek “deck the halls” melodies occupying little breaks here and there. “Santa’s Got A Bag Of Soul” by The Soul Saints Orchestra is the jam that will keep folks dancing up till’ New Years and the legendary Jimmy Reed makes a great addition to the comp with “Christmas Present Blues”, a blues/funk hybrid that perfectly rounds out the spirit of the entire album.
All in all, this is a serious refresher, and just might save your holiday. Finally an album that illustrates what Christmas is really about. So play it loud, rip off the cardigan and mind where the mistletoe  is. Christmas is supposed to be a party, isn’t it?
-Eric Kendall
